| Corrections' initiative helps offenders and early childhood providers |

Some offenders taking part in a Department of Corrections community service work initiative have embraced it to an extent that they have to be reminded to take breaks. Eight offenders doing community service work in Invercargill on Saturdays are building wooden furniture and toys, free of charge, for Southland preschools and kindergartens. Lou Avia, the service manager for community work, said offenders gained enjoyment and satisfaction from creating furniture and toys for the early childhood education providers. "They're really enthusiastic and enjoying every minute of it," Avia said. The instructor, community work supervisor Paul Boatwood, is a qualified joiner with a wealth of knowledge on the New Zealand and Australian building industries. Read More. |
