A Shelby County (Tenn.) Corrections Deputy was attacked last week by a male inmate at the Shelby County Jail.
Investigators say inmate John Spates, 37, who has been in jail since May 25, 2004, stabbed 46-year-old Corrections Deputy Patricia Campbell, who is assigned to the 2nd floor of the jail. Officers say just after 10:00 this morning, Spates attacked Deputy Campbell with a blade from a disposable razor as she stood near the pod entry/exit door.
Approximately 20 inmates, all with medical conditions, were being housed on the floor at the time of the attack. Spates was awaiting court on two counts of aggravated burglary.
We have also learned Spates faces two counts of assault to commit bodily harm, and one count of assault with offensive contact. Both of those charges stem from attacks he allegedly initiated inside the jail.
Campbell was wounded in the neck and was taken to Methodist University Hospital in non-critical condition. She's since been released.
