Three juveniles were charged with assault following a fight at the Lower Eastern Shore Children's Center in Maryland last Tuesday night, according to officials with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, which runs the facility. LaWanda Edwards, a spokeswoman for DJS, said staff members told a group of five juveniles to return to their rooms after dinner that night. Two of the juveniles complied, but the other three didn't, and one of the teenagers allegedly punched another in the jaw, Edwards said. That began a scuffle, and one of the facility's staff members injured a shoulder, Edwards said. "Each kid was charged, and all three of them have been sent to three different facilities to break them up," she said. Two of the teenagers involved were 15 and the other was 16, according to Edwards. After the fight was broken up, Maryland State Police were called to the center -- a juvenile detention facility located on Naylor Mill Road -- to charge the youths, Edwards said. Detective Sgt. Mike Kenhart of the state police in Salisbury said troopers are typically called to the center a couple times a month. "For that facility, while they have occasional scuffles, it's rare," Edwards said. "We don't really have that much trouble out of that facility." Edwards said the center has seven staff members, five of whom helped to break up the scuffle. She said the facility doesn't house more than 24 juveniles at any one time. |
