An inmate who says he was beaten by Broward sheriff's deputies was the attacker and not the victim, according to findings of an investigation released Friday by both the Broward County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office and the Broward State Attorney. That's what both agencies concluded after a nearly yearlong investigation into what led to the fight between inmate Alvin Bell and three deputies on May 5. The deputies involved still face an internal investigation. Bell, 31, has always said he was attacked unjustifiably while he was naked and handcuffed. The Sheriff's Office says a deputy defended himself and two other deputies assisted him. Circuit Court Judge Cynthia Imperato set bail at $60,000 for battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting with violence. Bell is already jailed on unrelated cases. Deputies Gene Miller and Demetrius Williams returned to their original assignments this week after being placed on desk jobs during the investigation, the Sheriff's Office said. "I'm sure they feel relieved and happy to regain their status," said Veda Coleman-Wright, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. Both agencies concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge the deputies. Bell has a long criminal record, which includes more than 30 arrests, including drug possession and obstruction, according to reports. Bell's attorney, Maurice Graham, could not be reached for comment Friday. Deputies still face the internal investigation to determine whether they violated inmate treatment procedures. The deputies' sergeant, Eugene Smith, remains on administrative duties. |
