Iowa's drug czar is considering a plan to create a separate prison devoted to drug treatment programs. Marvin Van Haaften unveiled his idea in an interview with The Associated Press, suggesting that the VA hospital that's closing in Knoxville would be an ideal location. Van Haaften said many details need to be worked out, but the hospital could be a place to send low-risk inmates addicted to drugs. Van Haaften said it wouldn't accommodate all the inmates with drug problems, but it would help. This year, the Legislature focused on tough new restrictions on pseudoephedrine, a common cold medicine used to make methamphetamine. Van Haaften supported the law, but expressed frustration that the debate over tough enforcement crowded out discussions of treatment and prevention. He said the prison system is a good place to start. |
