The sound of a baby crying was audible Saturday night in the Montgomery County (Texas) Jail when an inmate unexpectedly gave birth.
Lt. Dan Norris said the woman had come into the jail on a weekend sentence on Saturday.
During the weekend she went into labor. When jail staff discovered the woman they proceeded to call emergency medical services and aid the inmate, he said. The call to EMS was made at 10:41 p.m. Saturday.
"The baby was delivered in the jail before EMS arrived on scene," Norris said.
The mother and baby were taken to Conroe Regional Medical Center. Both were released after the mother finished her two-day sentence at the hospital, he said.
"Both are said to be doing fine," Norris said.
It is unknown if labor onset quickly or if the woman waited an extended period before notify jail officials, he said.
The department is not releasing the inmate's name. The baby's size and weight were not available.
