| Three charged with kidnapping for sustained assault on inmate |

Three man were charged with kidnapping and federal officials have opened a hate crimes investigation in connection with an assault at the Daviess County Detention Center. Preston T. Williams, 25, of the 600 block of Bolivar Street, Eric P. Burroughs, 19, of the 1400 block of West Third Street, and Lyderrick D. Jones, 31, of the 3900 block of Benttree Drive were each charged with kidnapping of an adult in connection with a Jan. 11 assault that occurred in a jail cell shared by Williams and Jones. According to a criminal complaint filed by jail Chief Deputy Jack Jones, inmate Michael Shaffer was taken to the hospital early on Jan. 12 after several inmates informed jail staff that Shaffer was seriously injured.
