| State prison inmate charged with rape in Minnehaha County dies |

A state prison inmate died at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls on Wednesday. Robert Sumner, 65, died in a comfort care setting at the penitentiary from an illness, according to the Department of Corrections. Sumner was serving a 60-year prison sentence for first-degree rape out of Minnehaha County. He pleaded guilty in 2009 to raping a 9-year-old girl, according to the Associated Press. In asking for a lesser sentence, his lawyer told the judge that Sumner had a medical condition and didn't have many years to live. Read More. |
