Spare books collected for local inmates

For 23 hours a day, inmates at the Cleveland County Jail sit in their cells with little to occupy their time.

Major Joel Shores, who is over the jail system, wants that to change.

“There are two of them in a 6-by-10-foot cell with a toilet. We are trying to find something to occupy their time,” Shores said.

The library at the jail is small, but Shores is hoping the community will help fill the shelves. Right now, the library consist of about 50 different kinds of books, plus a large quantity of Bibles.
