Two King County (Wash.) Jail officers were arrested yesterday over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female inmate and could soon face criminal charges. The two officers, age 45 and 39, were being held without bail yesterday in two different suburban jails -- rather than being locked up where they work. They were expected to appear in court today. One could face potential charges of first-degree sexual misconduct, and the other could face an indecent liberties or second-degree custodial sexual misconduct charge, according to King County Deputy Prosecutor Scott O'Toole, who is handling the case. Custodial sexual misconduct refers to sexual contact between a jail employee and an inmate, even if it was consensual. The King County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case and released few details on what allegedly happened between a 27-year-old woman and the officers in the Seattle jail or how it came to light. "It occurred in the last couple of months," sheriff's spokesman John Urquhart said. "We learned of it very recently." The officers were not on duty when they were arrested. The King County Corrections Guild, which is the jail officers union, and the guild's attorney did not return phone calls seeking comment yesterday afternoon. |
