| Assault of California State Prison, Corcoran Officers Under Investigation |

CORCORAN – California State Prison, Corcoran (COR), officials are investigating the attempted homicide of two correctional officers. At 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, inmate John Nieto, 28, began stabbing a correctional officer with an inmate-manufactured weapon. Another correctional officer intervened to help stop the attack and Nieto began stabbing the responding officer as well. Additional staff responded to the incident and used pepper spray, batons and physical force to subdue Nieto as he continued to strike staff with the weapon. Nieto continued to ignore orders to submit and staff used physical force to place him in handcuffs and leg restraints. The two officers were taken to outside hospitals for treatment of minor stab injuries. They were both treated and released and are recovering at home. Nieto did not sustain any injuries and has been placed in COR’s Administrative Segregation Unit as the attack is investigated. Nieto was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from Los Angeles County on Aug. 8, 2008, to serve a 21-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter. COR opened in 1988, employs approximately 2,500 people and houses about 3,000 minimum-, medium-, maximum-, and high-security custody inmates. The prison provides inmates with work, vocational, academic, educational, self-help, religious and other rehabilitative programs and has a fully licensed correctional treatment center. |
