Two inmates who tried to break out of the West Baton Rouge (La.) Parish jail are in lockdown and a veteran sheriff's deputy is recovering with a fractured skull and staples in his head. The two inmates involved are 21-year-old Donald Gibson and 36-year-old John Jones. West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Mike Cazes says they hit veteran sheriff's deputy Michael Fahey over the head with a sock full of batteries and bars of soap. Then, the sheriff says, they hit Fahey in the back of the head with a mop handle, knocked him down, grabbed his keys, jumped the booking desk counter, and hit the exit door. That's when they got trapped between two doors. They broke glass to try to escape, but by that time deputies had them back in custody. While all that was going on Saturday, the sheriff's dispatch had called everyone to the jail to try to stop the jailbreak. Deputy Johnny Moore was responding when he swerved to avoid a car in front of him on Highway 415. He flipped his sheriff's unit, and was ejected from the vehicle. He was released from Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and is recovering with a fractured skull. Jones was in jail for aggravated rape and aggravated kidnapping, and Gibson was in jail for armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and simple escape. Cazes says it was a freak accident and that no security procedures need to be changed. He will meet with the parish District Attorney today to decide what new charges to file against the two inmates. |
