A deputy is recovering from injuries after a fight broke out in the Dane County (Wis.) Jail Saturday night in a cell that officials said was at maximum capacity.
An inmate was being taken out for unruly behavior at about 7:15 p.m. when he began to resist. Three deputies and a sergeant were called in to help and were rushed by numerous other inmates, officials said.
The deputies were able to keep things under control, but one deputy suffered minor injuries to his foot.
While the jail's overcrowding issue continues to create an unsafe environment, one lieutenant said more jailors would help.
"In this particular incident, we had a number of deputies step in to the housing unit to assist," said Lt. Richelle Anhalt. "With the problem, however, you're talking 48 inmates and a lot less staff."
The inmates involved could face criminal charges.
The staff is reviewing policy changes that might help prevent an incident like this from happening again.
