Effective July 2018, inmate health care service responsibilities will transition from Correctional Managed Health Care (CMHC) – a unit of UCONN Health, to the Department of Correction (DOC). In December of 2016, the state legislature in a Special Session (pursuant to Section 20 of Pubic Act 15-1) directed the DOC to explore various options to provide inmate health care services. As a result, a consultant from A Health Adventure Inc. was hired to conduct a comprehensive review of the current system and develop recommendations for future health care delivery. The decision to transition health care services back to the DOC was principally based on the consultant’s recommendations, including streamlining organizational and administrative structures. All parties involved are committed to ensuring that quality medical and mental health care for the inmate population continues uninterrupted throughout this transition. Acknowledging that these developments may be unsettling for current employees, UCONN and the DOC will work closely with the relevant bargaining units to address all employee issues and concerns. Details associated with the future model of health care delivery have yet to be finalized, but it is anticipated that the vast majority of CMHC employees will transition and become DOC employees. |
