CLERMONT — What does it take for man to kill a fellow prisoner? In June, all it took was an argument over a few dollars’ worth of items purchased in Lake Correctional Institution’s canteen. Investigators have filled notebooks with statements about an unpaid debt, a threat, a shove, a call for a homemade knife, and an attack so quick that inmates thought it was a punch, not a piece of broken fence that was thrust into a man’s chest. Antonio Carter, 44, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Adonis Boone, 27, on June 8. It’s not a whodunit. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement interviewed more than a dozen eyewitnesses, both prisoners and corrections officers, though defense attorneys might mount a self-defense claim. But the case sheds some light on life — and death — behind the walls of the prison packed with men boiling with rage, including some with nothing to lose because they are already serving what amounts to life behind bars.
