A New Mexico prison officer has been moved out of intensive care following a fight with an inmate at the Guadalupe County Correctional Facility May 1. The officer, whose name has not been released, was one of four officers involved in the confrontation. He was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital -- not a hospital in Texas, as earlier reported -- with injuries from being hit by a padlock stuffed in a sock. State police said Mario Rodriguez wouldn't return to his cell as ordered at about 5 p.m. May 1, prompting the confrontation with officers. About 120 inmates began banging on cell bars and yelling during the incident, so prison officials placed the facility on lockdown. Portions of the jail were still locked down last Monday night. |
