U.S. Army Pvt. Lynndie England, whose photographed poses created lasting images of the prisoner abuse in Iraq, pleaded guilty last Monday to charges that she mistreated detainees in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. England, a 22-year-old single mother and Army reservist, pleaded to six charges that she mistreated or conspired to mistreat prisoners and one count that she committed an indecent act while serving as a U.S. military guard at the prison, located near Baghdad. England, who entered her plea at Fort Hood, Texas, was the seventh soldier to plead guilty to abuse charges. She could receive an 11-year prison term at her sentencing Tuesday, though most of those who have already pleaded guilty have received much shorter sentences. She faced a possible sentence of more than 16 years in prison had she gone to trial, but the Army prosecutors dropped two other charges as part of her plea agreement. |
