A Utah corrections officer filed suit last Tuesday accusing prison authorities of holding female employees to a higher standard than men and allowing their male co-workers to harass and insult them. Christine Facemyer, a shift leader at the Fremont Community Correctional Center, contends the hostile actions included putting her and other women "in known dangerous situations for the purpose of intimidating and discouraging them from continuing their employment" with the Utah Department of Corrections. Facemyer, who was hired in February 2002, also says that objections by women of the bad treatment were routinely dismissed and that she was retaliated against when she complained. Her suit, filed in U.S. District Court, seeks $400,000 in general and punitive damages and an order stopping the alleged conduct. The Corrections Department and six prison officials are named as defendants. A spokesman for the state Attorney General's Office, which represents the department, said officials have not reviewed the suit and had no comment. |
