| Vt. DOC helps fight opioid addicted inmates |

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) The Vermont Department of Corrections is taking steps to help addicted inmates. Medical teams working in the correctional system screen patients when they first enter custody. That helps them figure out the degree of the addiction. Depending on the results of that screening, opioid addicts have the option to start or continue Medical Assisted Treatment, also known as MAT. MAT is a combination of medicine and therapy to help addicts recover. However, the state is only required to provide the medicine portion of treatment. State officials say they are working to provide the emotional and behavioral therapy parts to their inmates (which the DOC refers to as patients). Read More. |
