Mistaken classification leads to inmate's release |

Authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped from the downtown Los Angeles criminal courthouse after being incorrectly classified as being eligible for release last Tuesday night. Alonzo Taylor walked away with other inmates, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore. Taylor, 41, is black, 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 215 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes, Whitmore said. Taylor, facing a "third strike" charge of abducting a 75-year-old Santa Monica woman during a burglary, had been improperly classified as a low-level security risk, even though he previously attempted to escape during one of two stints in state prison, the Los Angeles Times reported. Sheriff Lee Baca told the newspaper that Taylor was given privileges that eased his unauthorized exit. He said a preliminary investigation showed Taylor was able to change out of his jail attire and put on a white "release" suit at the courthouse and walk away like other inmates let go daily when their cases conclude. "A mistake, or more than one mistake, occurred here," Baca told the newspaper. He said the problems began with the failure to flag Taylor's state prison breakout attempt. "That error alone is unacceptable," Baca told The Times. "A mistake at the front end of the system will compound itself." |
