SUNBURY — The Northumberland County Commissioners invited the secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to tour the unfinished county prison being constructed in Coal Township.

At Wednesday’s prison board meeting, Commissioner Sam Schiccatano said John E. Wetzel is planning to come to the county to offer any suggestions before the project is officially finished.

“They (the DOC) are very interested in what we’re doing, because it’s not just a prison. It’s going to be some type of rehabilitation afterwards.” Schiccatano said. “They’re going to make a date when we can all get up there and go through it.”

A fire in January 2015 took the original prison in Sunbury out of commission. The future prison site is being constructed on the former Northwestern Academy site in Coal Township, now known as the Northumberland County South Campus.
