Work center inmates help beautify, add efficiency countywide |

ABERDEEN – From picking up trash and weedeating to working on county vehicles and distributing boxes at food pantries, there is a group of workers shared throughout the county each week who don’t receive paychecks. The Monroe County Work Center, located next to the Monroe County Detention Center, currently has 43 non-violent offenders who have varying degrees of work experience. By the time they’ve fulfilled their sentences, however, they’re groomed to live more productive lives. “Some people don’t know anything except selling drugs and surviving the streets,” said work center administrator Dwight Tate, who stresses employability skills through the program.
