One day after their capture, the last two of the four inmates who escaped through a hole from the Henry County (Ga.) jail faced a judge. Michael Williams and Jonathan Lee Scruggs were shackled, handcuffed, and separated by 12 other inmates during a hearing Monday morning. Both sought permission for a court-appointed attorney. If convicted of the new escape charge they face, the pair could be sentenced to an additional five years in prison. Scruggs, Williams, and two other inmates squeezed out of the jail last week via a hole in a fence. The other two escapees were found the following day, but Scruggs and Williams remained on the loose until Sunday. Williams turned himself in to the Clayton County Sheriff's Office and was returned to the Henry County Jail around 11:30 a.m. Sunday. "He said he was just tired of running," said Lt. Scott Perry. "Everywhere he turned, we were either there or had been there so we put the pressure on him and he figured it just wasn't worth it and turned himself in." Hours later, officers took Scruggs into custody during a traffic stop. An investigation continues into whether someone on the outside helped the four men escape. |
