Police in Benton County (Mo.) spent Wednesday searching for a prisoner who walked out of his cell when a jailer left a door open. Cody J. Weter, 28, took advantage of another inmate's heart problems to leave the Warsaw jail early Wednesday morning, said Benton County Sheriff Rick Fajen. When a jailer went to help the sick inmate, the door was left open, and Mr. Weter escaped. The inmate's medical problem was legitimate, the sheriff said. "He was not in on it," Sheriff Fajen said. "We have it on camera. (Mr. Weter) ran out in socks and underwear. He took advantage of an opportunity. The jailer made a mistake, and we've taken action on that." Police described Mr. Weter as 6 feet, 4 inches tall with short brown hair, brown eyes and several tattoos, including a ram on his head and the word "war" on the front of his neck. Mr. Weter should be considered dangerous, a Sheriff's Department official said. He had been held on charges of passing bad checks, stealing more than $500 and third-degree assault. Police still were searching for Mr. Weter at 6 p.m. |
