Police believe inmate choked to death at Clarenville women's prison |

A woman died following what police say was a choking incident in her cell at the province's Correctional Centre for Women in Clarenville on Friday afternoon. The Department of Justice and Public Safety confirmed an inmate died in hospital in Clarenville at approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday, after staff responded to "an emergency situation" involving an inmate the day before. Clarenville RCMP were called 3:30 p.m. Friday to investigate, and Staff-Sgt. Larry Turner told CBC News it appears the woman died in a "very unfortunate accident." Turner said the inmate was alone in her cell, eating, when food got caught in her throat and closed off her airway. Read More. |
