Allegan County (Mich.) Jail officials say one of their inmates managed to break free from his handcuffs for a few minutes before being recaptured Thursday. Erik Erickson is under arrest for passing fake checks and was on the run for about ten minutes before being caught. On his way to court, he was able to use a key and remove his handcuffs and make a run for it. Thanks to an alert resident, police caught up with him hiding behind some bushes on Cedar Street, not far from the courthouse. How he got the key is still under investigation. "The inmate had been transferred to our facility from a prison under the care of the Michigan Department of Corrections. It's unknown at this time whether or not he had brought the handcuff key with him from that facility or if he was able to obtain it while here at the facility in Allegan County," Lt. Frank Baker of the Allegan County Sheriff's Department told 24 Hour News 8. Erickson now will likely face new charges of attempted escape. |
