Onslow inmate accused of having shank |

A man incarcerated for charges of robbing someone at knifepoint is now accused of making a shank in jail. William David McKinney, 32, had felony possession of a weapon by a prisoner and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon added to his list of charges Monday. The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office sent a press release Thursday saying detention officers were alerted of the alleged homemade knife. OCSO Maj. Chris Thomas said other inmates alerted the detention officers and after searching McKinney, the detention staff allegedly found a shank made from plastic and thread from McKinney’s bedsheets. “The detention officers randomly do cell searches anyway, and they received information he possibly had a weapon so they conducted a search,” Thomas said. “It’s made of plastic -- maybe broken off from food trays or a toothbrush and then whittled down to what (he) wanted.” Read More. |
