| California State Prison, Sacramento Investigating Inmate Death as a Homicide |

FOLSOM – California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC) officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide. At around 11 p.m. Sunday, April 29, staff conducting an institutional count discovered inmate Anthony Junkin, 30, lying on the floor of his cell unresponsive. An alarm was sounded and responding staff immediately began performing CPR and transported Junkin to the facility’s triage and treatment area. The Folsom Fire Department arrived shortly after and Junkin was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m. Junkin was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) on Sept. 30, 2015, from Sacramento County with a sentence of 31 years to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, two counts of making criminal threats to cause great bodily injury, dissuading a witness and possession of a firearm by a felon. Officials have identified Junkin’s cellmate, Wayne Caskey, 55, as the suspect. Caskey has been placed in segregated housing as officials conduct their investigation. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is assisting SAC officials in the investigation. The Office of the Inspector General has been notified. Caskey was received by CDCR on July 21, 2009, from Sacramento County to serve 50 years to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder. During his incarceration, he was convicted of assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon and received an additional four-year sentence from Sacramento County. Activated in 1986, SAC is a high-security prison that houses approximately 2,100 general population inmates and employs about 1,700 people. The institution houses long-term inmates, inmates requiring specialized mental health programming, and inmates with high-risk medical concerns. |
