RICHMOND – As the Virginia Department of Corrections celebrates Correctional Officers’ Week from May 6-12, it does so with the lowest recidivism rate in the nation for the second year in a row. Virginia’s correctional officers are well trained and well informed. They use the most up-to-date techniques and evidence based practices to keep Virginia’s prisons safe and secure, and to help offenders on their path to reentry. “Our officers work around the clock to promote safety and to help people be better,” said VADOC Director Harold Clarke. “Their dedication to a challenging and sometimes dangerous profession keeps Virginia’s prisons safe, and allows all of us to focus on reentry and long-term public safety in the Commonwealth.” VADOC correctional officers are a primary reason the Department maintains its low recidivism rate. They serve as the front line in the Department’s efforts to rehabilitate offenders and promote successful reentry into our communities. Throughout the week, the VADOC will recognize and honor Virginia's correctional officers. The Department has more than 12,000 authorized positions; well more than half are correctional officers. |
