Inmate dies of injuries from suicide attempt in downtown jail |

A 52-year-old inmate who tried to commit suicide by hanging himself last Saturday has died, a sheriff’s official said Thursday. The inmate initially survived the attempt and was taken to a hospital, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Michael Blevins said in a statement. But the man’s injuries from the suicide attempt were severe, and he died shortly after 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Blevins said. The man, who was not identified, was found by deputies doing a security check on Saturday around 6:36 p.m in the medical observation cell where he was being held. Blevins said the inmate spoke to a nurse around 6:02 p.m. and was checked by a deputy at 6:09 p.m. He was discovered hanging and unresponsive in his cell during the next security check, made 25 minutes later.
