Three Mesa County Jail inmates face new charges after allegedly assaulting another inmate for being a "snitch" and causing injuries that sent the man to a hospital. Inmates Jaime Hernandez, 27, and Josh Apraiz, 19, each were charged with retaliation against a witness and third-degree assault. Inmate Jose Varela, 26, was charged with complicity. All three inmates received $10,000 cash bonds in court Tuesday. According to an arrest affidavit, the assault occurred May 20 in Oak pod, about four hours after the victim was moved to that pod. A jailer learned of the assault after the victim told the deputy he needed to leave the Oak pod, and the deputy noticed and documented scratches, cuts, blood and bruises and swelling on the man's face, the warrant said.
