Sheriff, inmates settle over abuse lawsuit |

A federal judge has approved a settlement between the Suffolk County (Mass.) Sheriff's Department and 55 former inmates who brought a class action lawsuit against the department. The suit, filed in 1999, alleged that officers at Suffolk County correctional facilities routinely beat inmates and treated them improperly during the tenure of former Sheriff Richard Rouse. The settlement was accepted by U.S. District Judge Rya Zobel. It does not award compensation to the former inmates, but acknowledges that the department, now led by current Sheriff Andrea Cabral, has made changes that addresses concerns raised in the lawsuit. It does, however, include a provision to pay $175,000 in attorney's fees. |
