Native Americans can now be housed in Cambria prison |

EBENSBURG — The Cambria County Prison can now house inmates from a Native American community, after commissioners gave their approval Thursday. At a public meeting, commissioners unanimously approved a three-year agreement between the local prison and the Cayuga Nation — a community of Native Americans based in Geneva, N.Y. The agreement allows residents of Cayuga Nation to be housed as inmates at Cambria County Prison, local officials said. The agreement stipulates that the Cayuga Nation must cover all expenses associated with housing those inmates, and Chief Clerk Michael Gelles said that amount is $85 per day. “It is at a price that we believe generates a profit,” county solicitor Bill Barbin said.
