COCONUT CREEK, Florida -- A state corrections officer who was supervising inmates in Coconut Creek was struck by a passing vehicle Monday and died from her injuries, officials said.

Few details were available about the crash that killed Tawanna Marin, a Doral-based officer who was supervising a squad of inmates working for the Department of Transportation when she was hit.

Marin, 48, lived in Pompano Beach, according to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“We are absolutely devastated by the tragic passing of Officer Tawanna Marin,” Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julie Jones said in a press release. “For more than nine years, Officer Marin served our state as a corrections officer, and we are forever grateful for her sacrifice and service to our community.”
