Three former Cameron County (Texas) jailers have been charged with handcuffing, dragging and beating a federal inmate. Charged with first-degree felony aggravated assault are 22-year-old John Roy Harris, 43-year-old Cosme Martinez and 23-year-old Michael David Saavedra. They're accused of beating 20-year-old inmate Javier Alejandro Garza on May 8. Their cases could go before a Cameron County grand jury in a couple of weeks. If convicted, they face five to 99 years in prison. Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio says he fired the three yesterday. Four other officers and a sergeant remain on administrative leave pending an investigation. Garza's attorney says his client remains in a federal detention center in neighboring Willacy County, where he's received treatment for jaw and rib injuries. |
