Jobs give female inmates sense of value and chance at fresh start |

SHARON – When Mercer County Jail Warden Erna Craig delivered the news to six female inmates that they would have a chance to earn money through an on-site work program, they reacted with heartfelt emotion. “When we first started, we selected six girls,” Jail Warden Erna Craig said. “I sat them down and told them, ‘Today’s your lucky day ... You’re going to have a job, and you’re going to be earning nine dollars an hour.’ They all started crying. They said, ‘You don’t know how much this does for us.’” The warden said trustee positions, which allow for employment within the jail, traditionally go to men.
