A fight involving about 20 inmates in the Washington State Reformatory's recreation yard ended quickly when an officer fired a warning shot into the ground, officials said. Two inmates were hospitalized for treatment of injuries after the fight about 7:30 p.m. Monday, prison spokeswoman Nancy Watts said. One was returned to the prison Tuesday and the injuries of the other did not appear to be life-threatening, she added. The cause of the fight remained under investigation. Conforming to prison policies, officers ordered the inmates to quit fighting, and when the melee continued, one officer fired a warning shot into the dirt at the base of an officer tower, Watts said. "At that time, the offenders quit fighting and went to the ground," she said. Inmates were locked in their cells for about 90 minutes while a search was made for weapons or other contraband, and normal operations resumed Tuesday, she said. |
