Prison escapee from 1981, headed back to Iowa |

Charles Leroy Cagley, who was arrested in Prescott Valley for escaping an Iowa prison 37 years ago, is headed back to Iowa, officials said Wednesday. Cagley, 68, was imprisoned in 1978 after a robbery conviction. He escaped in January 1981 from the Newton Correctional Facility, and had been living in Yavapai County since 2004. He had been using his own name. Cagley believed he was no longer wanted. His wife, Virginia, has said the Iowa prison’s warden wrote a letter in 2006, saying the 1981 warrant for Cagley’s arrest had been withdrawn and that Iowa no longer wanted him back in custody.
