ELIZABETH CITY — The four state prison inmates charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Oct. 12 fatal attacks and failed escape at Pasquotank Correctional Institution are going to be tried separately in Superior Court, the region's chief prosecutor said on Thursday. Mikel Brady and two inmates — Seth Frazier and Jonathan Monk — appeared earlier on Thursday in Pasquotank County Superior Court, where Judge J.C. Cole was conducting administrative hearings. Womble, in an email later in the afternoon, said he separated the case against Brady and his office plans to put Brady on trial first. Overall, Womble said, “We believe trying the matters separately gives us a better chance to seat a jury here in Pasquotank County.” Womble said although no trial date is set for Brady, his next court date is scheduled for Aug. 30. He said he hopes his office will complete discovery obligations and is will be in a position to select a workable trial date. Discovery is the phase of a case in which both sides can obtain facts from each other and question witnesses prior to the trial. Read More. |
