Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels says the state will save an estimated $12 million per year by managing meal services at state prisons through a private vendor. The state last Tuesday awarded a 10-year, $248 million contract to Philadelphia-based Aramark to oversee food operations at 30 correctional facilities statewide. It hopes to reduce the average cost per meal to 99 cents from a $1.41 while still meeting accepted nutritional standards. Aramark now provides food and support services to more than 450 prisons in North America. It plans to handle its work in Indiana with 298 workers, down from 336 now employed by the state. Current food workers will be given priority for employment with Aramark, and others will be given chances to work elsewhere within the Department of Correction. The changes take effect July 1. |
