A civil rights group wants the Gwinnett County district attorney to reconsider his decision not to file criminal charges against deputies involved in the death of an inmate who had been stunned with a Taser gun. Members of the NAACP are scheduled to meet with tomorrow with District Attorney Danny Porter to discuss the death of Frederick Williams. He died in May 2004 after an altercation at the Gwinnett County Jail. Porter presented the investigation in Williams' death but did not show jurors a videotape that showed a deputy stunning a handcuffed and manacled Williams with a Taser gun. Porter said earlier this month that he offered to show the tape but jurors declined. The president of the NAACP's Gwinnett branch, the Rev. John Stewart Jr., says the group will ask Porter to reconvene the grand jury and let them see the videotape. The videotape of the struggle between Williams and sheriff's deputies shows he was stunned with a Taser gun five times within one minute. Monday in Atlanta, another civil rights group -- the Southern Christian Leadership Conference -- plans a news conference asking the prosecutor to take another look at the case. |
