More inmates have walked away from Idaho jails and prisons in eight months this year than all of last year combined, triggering a serious Department of Correction incident review and a suspension of all inmate work-release activity at the Pocatello Women’s Correctional Center, authorities say. In an email to the Journal on Wednesday, Ammie Mabe, a constituent services manager with the Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC), said IDOC officials have no reason to believe that the seven inmates who have walked away from correctional facilities this year are related, but the department initiated its review because only five inmates escaped or walked away during all of last year. Of the five inmates to walk away last year, two were from East Idaho correctional facilities. So far this year, all seven inmates to escape custody have left East Idaho facilities — three from the Pocatello Women’s Correctional Center, or PWCC and four from the Idaho Falls Community Reentry Center, or IFCRC, Mabe said.
