An inmate unit at the Washington State Penitentiary is on restricted movement after an assault May 14. According to a Walla Walla Police Department report, inmates in Unit 8 were returning from the exercise yard when a 21-year-old inmate's throat was slashed by another inmate wielding a homemade knife. The injured inmate, Deshan Watson, was transported to Walla Walla General Hospital for treatment and later returned to the penitentiary. Penitentiary spokeswoman Lori Scamahorn said the cut was not life threatening and the incident did not appear to be racially motivated. She said penitentiary authorities recovered the knife, a razor fitted into a ``home-fashioned handle.' The suspect was not identified in the police report. Scamahorn said the unit was placed on restricted movement while officials continue their investigation. "We think it's an isolated incident," she said. |
