A Marion County (W.V.) Sheriff's Department employee is asking the Ohio County Prosecutor's Office to consider whether charges should be filed against a 17-year-old boy who allegedly fled from him last Monday afternoon in Wheeling. The teen, who was handcuffed with his hands in front of him, was being transferred to the Northern Juvenile Detention Center from Marion County when he fled, Wheeling police reports indicate. He was taken into custody nearly 40 minutes later by Wheeling police on an external fire escape of an apartment building in the 1100 block of Eoff Street. The search through a section of East Wheeling included two police cruisers, each manned by two officers, a sergeant, another officer and Marion County Sheriff's Department employee A.R. McHugh. Police reports indicate McHugh was transporting the boy into the Northern Juvenile Detention Center at 1050 Chapline St. The boy was being placed at the facility on the strength of a capias warrant signed by a Marion County Circuit judge, officers noted. As they were about to enter the former Lincoln School building, the boy fled, running south behind the center. McHugh and a maintenance worker, who was not identified in the police report, tried to follow the boy but lost sight of him after a brief pursuit. With assistance of the local police officers, the 6 foot-tall teen, who weighed 160 pounds, was found and returned to the center, reports indicate. |
