Butler prison inmates, employees sickened by 'unknown substance'

Three Butler County Prison inmates, four correctional officers and two nurses were hospitalized Tuesday evening after they came into contact with an “unknown substance,” Warden Joe DeMore said.

County Commissioner Leslie A. Oshe said the people were taken to a hospital and were being “decontaminated.”

Oshe said she received a text from the county’s public safety department and the sheriff at about 7 p.m. about the incident.

DeMore said the incident started when three officers were stricken while doing a cell search. A fourth officer came to their aid and was stricken as well.
