Authorities charged Ronald Eugene Pinchon's six cellmates with his murder Tuesday, three days after the 19-year-old died from a severe beating in the Madison County (Ala.) jail atop the courthouse. Three of the accused attackers were already in jail on murder charges, according to court records. Meanwhile, Pinchon's family hired Huntsville attorney Mark McDaniel to investigate Pinchon's death, and the Southern Center for Human Rights announced plans for its own investigation. The Atlanta-based organization monitors the jail as part of the settlement of a previous federal lawsuit over jail conditions. Sheriff's investigators filed murder charges Tuesday against Frankie Pruitt, 35; Alfred Tanner, 34; Christopher Robinson, 29; Jeremiah Davis, 17; Terry Lee Kelly, 39; and Carlos McGlathery, 34. Bond was set at $50,000 each. Robinson, Davis and Kelly are awaiting trial on previous murder charges. The other three are charged with crimes including sodomy, assault, drug dealing and burglary. Few details have been released regarding Pinchon's death, though the Sheriff's Department plans a news conference today. According to a preliminary autopsy, Pinchon died from blunt-force trauma to the chest. Corrections officers on the 10th floor of the county courthouse found Pinchon injured about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, after one of the cellmates alerted the officers. Sheriff Blake Dorning met briefly with Brenda Pinchon, Ronald Pinchon's mother, on Tuesday. Pinchon's family has retained McDaniel to get answers about the incident. Since Pinchon was in some rough company, McDaniel said, the first thing he wants to know is how inmates are assigned to cells. "These people have sustained a tremendous tragedy in their family and they will be seeking justice," he said. "There are a lot of questions that need answers." McDaniel said he and his colleagues are trying to piece together the facts and determine if a lawsuit should follow. McDaniel said he will examine the final autopsy report as soon as it is available. |
