A 41-year-old inmate at a women's correctional facility in Milpitas, Calif., died this morning and, if it is confirmed by autopsy, it will have been the second death by natural causes in Santa Clara County's jail system this year.
The San Jose woman was found unresponsive in her bed around 9:10 a.m.
Jail staff attempted cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, but despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at 9:33 a.m., according to county corrections department staff.
A welfare check of the medium-security open-dormitory-style jail unit had been conducted around 9 a.m., and the woman was reported to have been interacting with other inmates around 4 a.m., the corrections department reported.
Preliminary investigative results have not revealed any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
According to the department, the woman had been booked into the jail on Sunday by Los Gatos police. She had been arrested on alleged charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of heroin and a syringe, and providing false identification to a police officer.
Corrections officials report that the woman was also wanted on a $100,000 arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on allege charges of false impersonation of another to avoid prosecution, forgery, possession of stolen property, attempted burglary and parole violation. She was scheduled to appear in court on May 25 for arraignment on her new charges.
The woman's identity is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin.
