A veteran of the Fulton County (Ga.) Sheriff's Department has been suspended without pay and will be reassigned after leaving a loaded weapon in a public restroom at the Juvenile Justice Center. A Fulton County prosecutor found Deputy Hattie Richey's gun near courtrooms at the center, located just blocks from the building that police say suspected courthouse shooter Brian Nichols escaped from before allegedly killing four people in March. Sgt. Nikita Adams-Hightower said Richey was "distraught" and that she left the gun in the ladies' room accidentally. Richey, who has been with the department 17 years, will be transferred to jail duties. The incident comes as a task force studies security at the county's main courthouse. Since the March shootings, the Fulton County sheriff's department has come under sharp criticism for security at the courthouse. |
