Two separate assaults by Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmates left a couple of employees with only minor injuries but left the future uncertain for the assailants. The first incident occurred last Monday morning outside the Huntsville "Walls" Unit. Gabriel Debrent Williams had just received a complete discharge from the Estelle Unit after serving a full 10-year sentence for an aggravated robbery charge when he assaulted a correctional officer. Mike Viesca, spokesman for TDCJ, said Williams had been combative that morning with staff as they arrived at the unit, but was discharged and released anyway. It was reported Williams walked about 10 or 20 yards from the Walls Unit when he turned around and proceeded to assault one of the correctional officers on hand. Senior Officer Broderick Davis, who proceeded to arrest Williams and take him into custody, surmised that Williams just wasn't ready to get out. "He might have thought about being out and how that probably wasn't going to be much fun, and then he intentionally struck one of the officers on hand," Davis said. Williams is currently in custody at the Walker County Jail and, according to Davis, will have his case "run its course." Williams was charged with assault on a public servant and criminal trespassing. No significant injuries were reported by the assaulted officer. The second incident occurred May 20 at 1 p.m. in the kitchen area of the Ellis Unit. Inmate Raymond Smith struck food service employees Nathan Shroyer, 53, and Shawnique Cooper, 31, with his fist inflicting only minor, non-serious injuries to both. Smith currently has 118 months left of a 25-year sentence he received in Dallas in 1989 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. No motive was given for Smith's actions, though Viesca said he is relieved that no one was seriously hurt. |
