First inmate passes new GED program at Pennington County Jail

Sitting at their desks with their study materials on Thursday, 24 students applauded as their classmate became the first one of the group to receive his GED diploma.

The casual celebration took place at the Pennington County Jail, where the students are inmates and the first participants in the jail's new GED program.

After receiving his diploma, the first graduate — who can not be named because he is a federal inmate — encouraged his fellow students to keep studying so they too can pass the GED test, which serves as the equivalent of a high school diploma.

The program, which began in June, is meant to give inmates something to do while in jail, and help them once they are released, said Tami Rosser, a corrections officer who helps the students with their studies and grades tests.
